During the next year the Algonquin people need to maintain a focus on the extensive job ahead of us, by reading your ANR newsletters and attending upcoming Community meetings. Through open information sessions the ANR, Leadership will be turning to you for direction over the next year and a half.
A thousand acres of Land is not a nation without a citizen to walk it’ s soil. If the Algonquin Nation is to move forward as a unified body it must be defined with recognized Algonquin’ s having equal rights. No doubt Canada and Ontario know who they are, and their citizens enjoy the same rights throughout the land.
A man in British Columbia who says I am Canadian has the same meaning as a man in Ontario who says he is Canadian. The Algonquin Nation must recognize all of its citizens as equal. They must be able to stand shoulder to shoulder and say I am an Algonquin. They must not stand and say I am non-status, I am status, I am off reserve or I am on reserve. They must all be equal citizens of the Algonquin Nation. Dorothy White-duck Rosenburg once wrote “ If you want people to see how strong the Algonquin Nation is, allow us all to be seen as Algonquin, and then call us together as a Nation. Stand in front of us, and tell us what you want of us, and what it will mean to all of us! You may, however, want to ensure you have a large area. I think you might be surprised.”

Over the next year and a half as your ANR I will be standing in front of you, asking for your input on Eco-Tourism, Economic Development, Housing, Land, Sacred Sights, Forestry, Harvesting, and many other topics. As a Leader I need to be prepared for a Negotiation process to unfold post December 1, 2005. It will be important that both you, the Algonquin people, and myself have a clear understanding of how these topics will unfold in front of us and what they will mean to each Algonquin.
